Many of you who are piercing enthusiasts or beginners who are keen to know about the fascinating world of piercing jewellery and want to know more about it to make informed choices. Let’s get started with the types of piercing jewellery.
Threaded Jewellery
These are the type of jewellery that has a screw thread on one or both ends, which can be unscrewed for removal. It can be easily inserted and removed without any difficulty. Threaded jewellery includes studs, labret, and straight, curved or circular barbells.
It is further categorized into two parts
Internally threaded Jewellery:

It is a type of jewellery in which a screw is threaded on the ball or bead that sits into the hollow end of the post. It makes it more comfortable to wear, especially during the initial piercing. This means the thread is hidden inside the jewellery, making it less likely to snag or catch on clothing.
Externally threaded jewellery

In contrast to internally threaded jewellery, externally threaded jewellery has a screw head on the post itself, and the other end of the jewellery carries a decorative top. This kind of jewellery is rare and is not a good option for initial piercings as it doesn’t pass through the skin smoothly.
Thus the internally threaded jewellery is the better choice not only because it smoothly passes through the hole without irritation or scraping but also because it is made up of high-quality material that is less likely to cause an allergic reaction.
Overall, threaded jewellery is a good choice for anyone looking for body jewellery that is easy to insert and remove, less likely to cause problems, and is made from high-quality materials.
Threadless Jewellery

Threadless Jewellery, also known as push-fit or press-fit piercing, is designed so that it is easy to insert and remove. It is composed of two parts:
- Decorative Top
The decorative part of threadless jewellery is either a metal or dazzling gemstones that come in different shapes, sizes and designs
- Hollow Post
The decorative top is attached to a hollow tube into which the top is inserted into it. The top and the post are held by tension, which reduces the chances of falling out.
To insert the jewellery, you basically push the end onto the post until it connects into pace. Threadless jewellery offers a secure way to easily adorn piercings without having thread and screws.
Captive bead rings

Captive Bead Rings are a type of piercing jewellery that comprises a small bead or a ball that fits into a small opening in the ring. Both are held together by tension. The beads are slightly larger and have a small hole to fit comfortably against the ring’s endpoint to complete the ring circuit.
The bead or a ball is often made up of coloured glass, acrylic, ceramic or a gemstone, whereas the ring is usually made up of surgical stainless steel, niobium or titanium. They are used in a variety of piercings that include ear, nose, nipple or genital piercing and are popular choice for septum rings.
Seamless Ring

Seamless rings are similar to captive bead rings but don’t carry a bead; instead, it is a ring that completes a circle without any visible opening or closure of the ring that unsnaps itself. It is also known as seamless rings. They give a solid continuous look typically made up of metal. The main advantage of this jewellery is that it is easy to put into the piercing. Moreover, it gives you a minimalist look.

Surface bars and dermal anchors are the types of body piercing that are done on the flat surface of the skin.
Surface bars are long curved bars adorned with a ball, gems or a bead inserted below the skin surface with an entrance and exits the hole. They are implanted horizontally on a variety of areas like the chest, stomach, back or shoulders. The surface bars can only be removed by a professional piercer. It is better to get assistance.
On the other hand, dermal piercings or micro-dermal implants are single-point piercings. They are implanted into the skin using a dermal punch, where the jewellery is placed on the top of the skin while the anchor is implanted below the skin. You can only change the decorative part of the piercing, whereas the end remains underneath the skin. It can be done surface of the body, including the neck, face, back or shoulders and like surface piercing, you need to go to your piercer for permanent removal.
Clicker or hinged ring

Clicker or hinged rings are commonly used piercings and are initially worn through the septum, but they can be worn in any piercing. It has built it in hinge or clicker typically a small segment that can be easily open and close. They can be found in various designs from simple to intricate. It is comfortable to wear this jewellery thus making it a popular choice among those who prefer simpler and convenient jewellery option.
Ear Plugs

Ear plugs are the jewellery used for stretched piercing. These are also known as gauges and can be found in three different styles.
- Non-flared or straight: they have the same diameter for the entire length of the plug and are secured by using O-rings on either end.
- Single flared: widened from one end and a flat, slightly hollow back on the other. The widened end helps to hold the plug firmly in the piercing, whereas the other end stays at the back of the lobe. Single flare plugs are usually worn with silicone O-rings or rubber, which keeps them in place.
- Double flared: widened from both sides, which helps them to sit securely in place without using O-rings. They can be inserted into the piercing by stretching the area gently and sliding the flared ends through it.
When choosing jewellery for your piercings, it is crucial to consider factors like quality, material, size, shape and, most importantly, comfort. I hope this blog helps you get relevant knowledge related to types of jewellery.
